Harmonic Dunn & Evanston SPACE Present:

Escondido

Featuring Los Colognes

Escondido is Nashville, TN based artists Jessica Maros and Tyler James. Recorded live in a single day, their 10-song debut album was released Feb. 26, 2013. Their sound is a washed out desert landscape steeped in American roots music. “We wanted it to be like Clint Eastwood playing pop songs at one of the honky-tonks downtown,” James mused. “But we’ve been told it sounds like desert sex.”

The two gathered some musician friends and cut the record on October 18, 2011 at The Casino Studio in Nashville. “We wanted to capture that initial instinct,” says James. “The talent in this town allows you to set up in one room and let ’em do their thing.” Musicians Evan Hutchings (drums) and Adam Keafer (bass) give the backbeat to Scotty Murray’s washed out western-style electric guitar. Maros’ seductive vocals bring to mind Mazzy Star as they float atop James’ sparse guitar, trumpet, and keyboard work.

The album marks a new chapter for both members. Maros, a Vancouver, British Columbia native, found success as a clothing designer after initially moving to Nashville with a record deal. Her jewelry has been worn by the likes of Prince and Lady Antebellum, her handmade dresses gracing the red carpet at the Oscars and Country Music Awards. James, a small-town Iowa native, has spent the last decade on the road as a solo artist and member of Los Angeles based Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. “We both wanted a change of pace,” says Maros. “I wanted to focus on music again and Tyler wanted to spend more time in town making records.” The result is the formation of Escondido, a band whose songs are a tale of love lost across the western sky.

Netherfriends at Tonic Room

Featuring Chandler London

Netherfriends is the never-ending touring and recording one-man band machine. A rare loop pedal dude who doesn’t just get louder and thicker but opts instead to weave elaborate, beautiful pop songs overflowing with hooks and sentimentality. About 4 minutes into his set, when he starts dancing like James Brown, you’ll be hooked for life. Netherfriends (aka Shawn Rosenblatt) recently finished a year long project where he wrote and recorded a song and performed in all 50 states.

As a Hip Hop artist representing the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, Chandler London is a passionate Emcee determined to share his vision with the world. With initial influences stemming from Ritchie Valens and the raw energy seen in DMX’s Ruff Ryders’ Anthem, Chandler has found new inspiration within acts such as Jay Z, Andre 3000, Ghostface Killah and Big Pun. His sound is rooted in authenticity, being one who writes lyrics in his head opposed to the pen and pad; he’s meticulous in the construction of a song, which produces an honest and relatable dynamic to the music. Chandler’s rhymes channel insight from past and current experiences, while utilizing Synesthesia (the ability to see sound) in his creative process that helps him become closer to his music, saying he needs to, “Listen to the beat, the words are there, I’ve just got to find them.”

En route to recording a project alongside Stefan Ponce called ‘The Science of Sleep’, Chandler’s future plans is to find longevity in creating music, while exploring new avenues to showcase his talent and skills on the Mic.

Harmonica Dunn & Silver Wrapper Present at Tonic Room:

American Babies

Featuring Mooner & Young Hines

Since 2007 American Babies has been the mouthpiece for Philadelphia based musician Tom Hamilton. After spending the early 2000s building a national fan base fronting the electro-rock band Brothers Past, releasing two critically acclaimed albums and averaging 150 shows a year, a change was in order. Hamilton looked to shed the electronic “bleeps-n-boops” production that had become his calling card and make an album that was loose, rolling and full of vibe.

“Being in a band can get to be very political, where everyone needs to be happy. That doesn’t always lead to artistic fulfillment,” Hamilton says. “I had a vision I wanted to follow but felt that going solo as a singer/songwriter wasn’t a very comfortable fit for me. Then it dawned on me to just start another band where I’m the only real constant member. Problem solved.”

So Hamilton moved to Brooklyn and enlisted friends Joe Russo (Benevento/Russo Duo, Grateful Dead offshoot Furthur), Kevin Kendrick (Fat Mama), and brother Jim Hamilton to hit the studio with producer Jon Altschiller (Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Rachael Yamagata) and a dozen songs that spawned American Babies self-titled release (2008 Sci Fidelity).

“That first album was exactly what I wanted it to be. A few guys whom are great friends sitting around playing tunes that they all liked and having a good time together. We let the tape roll and just hung out laughing, drinking, and making fun of each other. Somewhere in there we managed to play some great stuff.”

Hamilton hit the road with American Babies either playing solo shows or with a rotating cast of players that included Russo, brother Jim Hamilton, Scott Metzger (Gene Ween Band), Dave Driewitz (WEEN), and Ryan Thornton (Sean Bones) landing showcases on Festivals like Bonnaroo and CMJ (2007), Langerado, SxSW and Newport Folk (2008) as well as supporting slots for the Derek Trucks Band, Sheryl Crow, The National, and the Wood Brothers.
