This Week Ahead: Monday December 2nd- Sunday December 8th, 2013

Zak Shaffer at Tonic Room

Zachary Hank William Nelson Shaffer is a very versatile musician with an undeniably dynamic stage performance. He truly has an original sound, with even his musical cohorts finding difficulty comparing him to anyone else. He sings with emotion and a whole lot of soul, and can go from a ‘country croon’ to a ‘rock n roll growl’. Zak’s sound is an awesome blend of rock, pop, blues, and country, creating his own unique style. Not only is Zak a great vocalist and guitarist, but he is a great performer as well. He played radio personality “Bubba Hank” on the Old Hippy Blue Grass Hour on Q95.3 for a couple years, so you can imagine what kind of fun he can bring to the stage!

Genome at Tonic Room

Featuring Kick The Record and J-Livi & The Party

Genome is a unique blend of organic funk and psychedelic jams with jazz and electronic music. These Chicago based musicians utilize an array of many instruments, both acoustic and electronic, to create an ecstatic dance party that transcends time, space, and earthly boundaries.

Kick the Record began when four veteran musicians got together to play the music they’ve always loved—funk, soul, and
jazz…music that creates undeniable motion on and off the stage, kinetic sonority. Yes, this quartet casts light on the profiles of the greats, but more than an homage to bygone eras, KTR innovates; classic songs are treated to become distilled tributes, the songforms: vehicles for exploration. Kick The Record is a powerful quartet that has been blowing the minds of its fans with its high energy driven live shows in downtown Chicago venues for the past year.

J-Livi & The Party is a Chicago-based brass band that focuses on playing nothing but funk and hip-hop. We are heavily influenced by artists who are native to Chicago – any artist of renown from our fair city has influenced The Party (in some ways personally), from Earth, Wind & Fire right on up through Kanye West. Our song list includes tunes by Chicago, EWF, Jean Knight, Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Cee-Lo Greene, Kanye, and Macklemore. J-Livi and the Party is a Pep Band on steroids: our goal is to make every performance a party atmosphere while maintaining the highest level of musicianship. Our band can PARTY, and we’re the loudest and baddest band in town! We can’t wait to play for (and party with) you!

Rumpke Mountain Boys at Beat Kitchen

Featuring Huckleberry Green and Prichard Harter

For over ten years, Ohio’s #1 bluegrass band, the Rumpke Mountain Boys, have been amassing devoted fans with their signature blend of jamgrass, aptly named “Trashgrass.” Phenomenal songwriting framed by fiery-fast mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar and upright bass, creates a sound that has been described as foot-stompin’ whiskey-spillin’ old-timey psychedelic folk music!

Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, the Rumpke Mountain Boys have made a name for themselves with their high-energy improvisational shows that showcase some of the fastest picking in the game. Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon sums it up well, stating, “The Rumpke Mountain Boys – Hot licks, cool tunes. A party waiting to happen.” 2012 was a banner year for this talented quartet, highlighted by the release of their album “Trashgrass,” and an epic performance at the All Good Music Festival in a 10:30am time slot. Normally, this would be prime sleeping time for most festival go-ers, but the Rumpke boys brought the throngs out early. 2012 also marked the return of their own Festival, Snugglefest. They appeared at Appalachian Uprising, Dark Star Jubilee and Terrapin Hill Music Festival, just to name a few. Named Cincinnati’s best bluegrass band for seven years running, they have shared the stage with iconic artists such as Leftover Salmon, Tim O’Brien, Ralph Stanley, Keller Williams, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Del McCoury.

Despite all these accolades, the Rumpke Mountain Boys are known as one of the most fan-friendly groups in the music world today. This is due to their “campfire tours,” where they migrate from campsite to campsite, many times picking until dawn with a hoard of faithful followers in tow. Their drive, dedication, and desire to play good music together shines through in their performances. Many music fans who dismiss bluegrass as “country” or “old people” music have walked away from their set with a newfound respect for this style. The Rumpke Mountain Boys are not your Grandfather’s bluegrass band. With influences ranging from Jimmy Cliff, The Grateful Dead and Tom Waits to the more traditional Osborne Brothers and Stanley Brothers, the Rumpke Mountain Boys take old time music to a new level with an original approach, leaving no genre of music untouched.

Each member is a talented songwriter – Ben Gourley on mandolin, Adam Copeland on acoustic guitar, and Jason “Wolfie” Wolf on banjo are joined by Memphis-bred upright bass player J.D. Westmoreland to form a team that has taken the region by storm. The boys can be found honing their chops at a weekly Tuesday residency at Stanley’s Pub in Cincinnati. Their marathon live shows are now legendary, making them one of the most sought after festival acts in the east. 2013 is destined to be a pivotal year for the Rumpke Mountain Boys, kicking off the year with a New Year’s show in Cleveland, OH and a trip to the legendary Royal Studios in Memphis to begin working on the next album.

DJ NoDJ at Tonic Room
Featuring EGI. Ethereal Groove Inc.
DJ noDJ is a thousand-piece electronic dance band from Chicago. They specialize in re-creating the music of the best DJ’s with “startling inefficiency.” There is no DJ in this band. What normally takes just 1 guy behind a lap top, now takes ten super-focused DJ noDJ musicians. The upside is that you get a 10 dimensional musical experience, with all the churning and grinding of a runaway train, that only a large group of separate humans can achieve. DJ noDJ hit for the first time in May of 2012, playing two nights of a 40 minute Daft Punk set to two sold out crowds @ Martyrs. They feature all the members of This Must be the Band, Talking Heads tribute, plus Alan Berliant (Mavis Staples) on bass. He’s the greatest.
EGi (Ethereal Groove, Inc.) is an infectiously danceable experimental funk group from the Chicagoland area. Featuring Joe DeLucca on bass, Noe Perez and James Hernandez on guitar, and Devon Bates on drums. This young and energetic group pushes the limits of improvisation, writing, and energy-rich shows. Fusing funk, rock, and instrumental post-rock into something that feels familiar, and yet totally new, the band displays great versatility and a progressive appreciation for many genres. Catch a show near you to experience the power and energy of an EGi show for yourself!
