About Gramps The Vamp:

Gramps The Vamp combines heavy afro-funk, dark psychedelia, and freak-jazz for a wild and danceable sound with a 1970s horror/sci-fi flair.

Founded in 2011, Gramps The Vamp started out as a house party band in Chicago, cutting its teeth on classic horn-driven funk. However, after a few of its Halloween shows yielded fantastic results, the band decided to break the funk mold and craft a darker, more experimental sound.

“Doom Funk” as the band calls its signature style, first appears on its self titled debut LP. For this 2014 release, Gramps The Vamp recruited funk/soul veteran Sergio Rios (Orgone) to root the record in a familiar 70s funk sound, acting as a bedrock for experimentation with found sound samples from vintage cinema and radio. The record was used the following year by filmmaker Alaric S. Rocha as the soundtrack to his 70s throwback B-horror film Demonoid (1971).

Experimentation continued further with Gramps The Vamp’s 2016 sophomore effort, The Cave of 10,000 Eyes. A concept album in the form of a faux horror film soundtrack, this record explores instrumental groove based music as narrative, bridging themes across different tracks and using originally produced samples that immerse the listener in the story.

Gramps The Vamp was named Best New Band by the Chicago Reader (2013), Best Emerging Artist by Deli Mag Chicago (2014), and has toured extensively around the US in support of both records, making a name for itself with its tight yet untamed live show. Hard at work on new material, Gramps The Vamp’s course is set for further explorations into the dark, wild and strange corners of groove based music.
