Tommy Carroll "Calculated Discomfort" Release Show
“From creating a fusion of groovy, feel-good tunes with his band to taking listeners on a journey through his abstract, ambient and ‘textural’ soundscapes, Tommy Carroll does not like to limit himself to any one genre. One might even say that he’s on his way to creating his own form of jazz.” – Music Garage Chicago

Tommy Carroll is a Chicago-based drummer, producer and composer with an ability to imbue music with emotional depth and improvisational dexterity. An in demand drummer for rappers, songwriters and experimental metal artists alike, Tommy leads his own jazz fusion group that has showcased at venues and galleries across Chicago including the Hideout, Tonic Room, AMFM, Elastic Arts and Café Mustache. His forthcoming album, Calculated Discomfort, sets cosmic jazz to the arc of personal growth and self-realization. His previously released album Not Amazing addresses his experiences as a blind adult.

Tommy has a background in journalism and seeks to tell a story with every creative project he touches. Years of playing in DIY bands while holding down various jobs and school commitments have inspired Tommy to create immersive sonic experiences that speak to everyday life.

Tommy has also released ambient electronic music through his Elementary Foreign Languages series, contributed compositions and percussion to several short film scores, and was named a 2017 3Arts award nominee.

As a sideman, Tommy has played from coast-to-coast with rappers Me’Chelle and E. Oks. He appears regularly accompanying Chicago songwriters Sophie Rae and Joseph the Worker and contributes noisily intricate drumming to new sludge metal trio Doomlaut. Sometimes, he can be caught playing more traditional jazz with saxophonist Joey Rosin as a member of the Defpotec quartet or rocking a dance party with DJ SKOLi under the name Where Is The Nature. He has been featured on recordings spanning styles from freeform psychedelic rock, to rambling post punk, to sneakily angular modern jazz.

As a teenager Tommy was a bookworm who happened to make skateboarding videos that have received more than a million total plays worldwide.
